Top 5 PS2 Games
Did you know that the PS2 was the best-selling console of all time? This was the generation that saw SEGA’s demise, while Nintendo struggled to keep up with the Game Cube. Hot on the heels of the hugely successful PSOne, SONY fully hit their stride with the PS2 and gamers got to enjoy some of the best games of all time as a result.
In this list, we’ll be taking a look at the top 5 PS2 games of all time. Time to get out that old system, blow off the dust and dig into some retro gaming gold!
Shin Megami Tensei – Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei – Nocturn is technically the fifth game in the story but don’t worry if you haven’t played the others, you’re unlikely to be able to follow the plot either way!
That doesn’t prevent this dark tale from being fully encapsulating though. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the graphics are absolutely top-notch and perfectly able to bring the strange worlds to life. It feels as though you’re watching an anime!
Meanwhile the turn based battle systems are some of the best that the JRPG genre has to offer. Some unique twists on the usual mechanics include extra turns following critical hits and a cool bullet-time mode.
It’s sort of like what would happen if you mixed Devil May Cry with Final Fantasy. The result? Sheer awesomeness. This is an overlooked classic on one of the top 5 PS2 games. It’s also probably one you haven’t played… so check it out!
Final Fantasy X
If it’s an RPG you’re looking for though, then why not turn to the absolute leader of the pack? The Final Fantasy has always been reliable for delivering memorable characters, beautiful worlds and tense turn-based combat. This one is no different and really builds on the successes of Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX.
This was something of a golden age for the genre and Final Fantasy X is one of the best that it had to offer. No surprise then that it’s also one of the most engaging games on PS2.
Zone of the Enders 2
Tired of walking around expansive worlds being surprised by the sudden appearance of monsters? Time to turn your attention to something a little more action packed then – and the PS2 certainly had plenty of action-oriented titles to offer.
Zone of the Enders was tragically overlooked at the time of its release, despite incredible graphics, awesome robots and high-paced action gameplay. It’s like a fully 3D bullet-hell game, with anime art and amazing special effects. There’s nothing quite like back-flipping over a boss’ missile before delivering an awesome attack of your own. This was also an early game to offer a semi-open world!
There’s a HD remake out now that’s helped ZOTE to gain some of the attention it deserves: but there’s still nothing quite the nostalgia of playing the original on PS2. Oh, and ZOTE 2 is the significantly stronger title of the two.
